And I thought Victorian porn was boring…

This (NSFW) is slightly more interesting. The photographer was a guy called Charles-François Jeandel, and he did a series of pictures like this in the 1890s. I found some decent information about him in French; basically it says that he and his wife were good Catholics, but he was a failed painter and so took to photographing bondage porn at his country estate. The blue “cyanotypes” were an early form of film. His notebook of 114 pictures was unearthed in the ’80s and now belongs to the Musée d’Orsay, an erotic museum in France.

I’ve been pretty interested in Victorian porn and have been doing some research lately, but the Internet hasn’t really yielded much even in the way of bare breasts. I’ve been trying to disprove the cliché about Victorian porn being “OMG bare legs!” and perhaps I have succeeded. Probably that’s due to Jeanet and his photos being French; the British and the Americans are just too puritanical (and let’s not even mention the Canadians…).

See what happens when you decide to practice your French by reading Wikipedia (which is what led me to the pertinent series of links)? Well, that was fun.

  1. For an interesting (and in depth) look at Victoria n porn I recommend The Pearl, a monthly British journal that was published from 1879 to 1880. A collection of all the editions is published by Blue Moon Books. I’m not sure if it is still in print, but if you are interested in Victorian porn it is well worth you while to track a copy down. Thr breadth of sexual tastes catered to and the the explicitness of the language are astounding even now in this porn-saturated age.
